All five goals came in the last twenty minutes as Chatham Town fell to a 4-1 defeat at home to Guernsey.
Kickoff was delayed by twenty minutes because Guernsey’s flight arrived late, but Ade Batula was into the action as soon as the game did start. His shot from Austin Edwards’ pass was comfortably saved though, and Guernsey were soon on top.
Twice in the first 15 minutes Guernsey missed badly, although they had a stroke of fortune when none of the officials noticed goalkeeper Riley carry the ball over his own goal line for what should have been a corner. Chatham did win a corner midway through the half and might have had a penalty for an apparent handball, but Guernsey immediately broke downfield and forced a fine save from Louis Lawlor.
Guernsey hit the post on 33, and a shot from the rebound was again well saved by Lawlor. Chatham almost sneaked a goal on 41 though, when goalkeeper Riley rather casually threw the ball a few feet in front of himself. He hadn’t seen Ricky Gundry just yards away, and Gundry stole the ball from Riley only to be ruled to have fouled the keeper.
Justin Ascheri’s shot from a free kick a minute later was off target, and the teams turned around goalless. Guernsey had the ball in the net five minutes after the restart, but it was ruled out for offside. Another good save from Lawlor kept the teams level on the hour, but a fluke goal gave Guernsey the lead with 73 minutes played.
Lawlor seemed to have a cross covered, but it hit Guernsey’s Dodds on the back and then looped high over Lawlor and into the goal. Jon Difford was unfortunate enough to turn another cross into his own net a minute later, but Chatham soon pulled a goal back when Ascheri scored from the penalty spot following a clear handball.
Ascheri’s free kick two minutes later just evaded the players waiting at the far post, before Young accepted a simple chance to score Guernsey’s third minutes later.
George Benner did hit the post for Chatham late in the game, but Allen then completed the scoring for Guernsey to give them three away points which are likely to secure their status in this division for another season.
Nothing is certain yet, but Chatham now face a monumental task if they are to avoid relegation and must rely on other results going in their favour.
