After the excellent win at Walton Casuals, Chatham Town had high hopes for the game against Godalming Town. But Godalming scored the only goal of an uninspiring game after 65 minutes, which makes Chatham’s task if they are avoid relegation more difficult than ever.
Although Godalming won two corners in the first five minutes, the Chatham defence had no trouble in clearing them. They were soon on the attack themselves, with a Ricky Gundry cross winning a corner and Abdul Aziz Lyoubi soon winning another. A good save from Louis Lawlor kept out a Godalming free kick on 27, and a minute later came an important moment in the game as Chatham were reduced to ten men when Lyoubi was sent from the field for his second yellow card in the space of a minute.
A Freeman Rogers header following a free kick on 35 wasn’t far off, but thereafter Godalming had the ball for most of what remained of the first half. More than once they chose to shoot from long range, but none of these shots threatened the Chatham goal.
Chatham dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half. A Jordan Gallagher cross won a corner, and then an excellent run by Justin Ascheri saw him take the ball into the Godalming area before passing to Gallagher whose shot went just over. But on 65 minutes came that only goal, the scorer looking surprised to find the ball at his feet with only the goalkeeper to beat, and Chatham had it all to do. Godalming should actually have increased their lead five minutes later, but missed badly from close range following a corner.
Chatham had the ball in the net on 75. The Godalming keeper dropped the ball and it landed for Leonardo Mazzone, but he was ruled offside and so the goal didn’t count. Ascheri took a shot when Chatham won a free kick just outside the Godalming area, and with their defence slow to organise that was the right thing to do, but his effort went wide. Lawlor was in action at both ends in the final moments of the game, first saving from a Godalming player who had run the entire length of the pitch before shooting and then coming forward as Chatham won a late corner, but the final whistle brought Godalming the points from a scrappy game.
