Match Report

Referee:  Mr A Waters     Attendance: 84.

Chatham Town matched their hosts in the first half, but three second half goals from Thurrock led to Chatham departing this season’s FA Trophy at the first hurdle.

Chatham’s plans were disrupted when George Humber pulled up during the warm up.  That meant a late change to the line up, with Joe Bingham starting the game in the no 16 shirt.  Both teams started cautiously, but it was Chatham who came close to taking the lead after just nine minutes.  Thurrock goalkeeper Madden beat Kieron McCann to an Omari Hibbert cross, but his attempted clearing kick hit McCann and rebounded towards goal.  The ball ran off the pitch just wide though, and five minutes later a Joe Loft shot went over the bar.

While both sides were creating chances, shots on target were few in the first half.  Chatham had one after 33 minutes when a free kick led to a McCann cross from which Hibbert headed goalwards, but his effort was comfortably saved by Madden.

Chatham had a good chance seven minutes into the second half when Joe Bingham’s long ball found Hibbert inside the penalty area, but he stumbled over his feet and was unable to get a shot in.  After that though, Thurrock began to get on top.  It needed a good save from Ryan Nicholls on 57 minutes to keep Chatham level, but three minutes later Cowley fired them ahead from close range.  Five minutes later they were two up, when Nicholls could only parry a fiercely hit shot as far as Stimson who scored.  Clark soon made it three from the penalty spot, although Nicholls did get a hand to the ball, and the game was over.

McCann put a free kick over the bar in the time that remained and saw another shot well saved, while Holder put a shot just wide, but Thurrock’s three goals in ten minutes ensured that it was they who stay in the competition.  The league is Chatham’s top priority though, and our march up the table could begin next Saturday at Hastings!
