George Humber scored a hat trick as a sparkling second half performance took Chatham Town to a 4-1 win against Guernsey.

Chatham unveiled new signing Austin Gacheru, who has returned to the club after a spell with Sevenoaks Town, and he was in the action straight away.  After four minutes he headed wide from a Richard Davies cross, and three minutes later he had the ball in the net from Humber’s cross only to be ruled offside.  Kwarbena Osei shot over the bar from a free kick on the quarter hour, while Davies and Kieron McCann both forced saves from Guernsey keeper Tardif.

Guernsey too were creating chances, but they were asking few questions of Ryan Nicholls until they took the lead on 38 minutes. Their top scorer Allen was allowed too much room inside the penalty area, but it was soon forgotten as Chatham equalised within two minutes.

Humber took the ball past the keeper to the byline on the left, and was then faced with a narrow angle from which to shoot – but his shot found the net, to give Chatham their first goal for six hours of playing time.

Guernsey had their best period of the game at the start of the second half, and twice Nicholls was forced into good saves to keep the teams level.  Then on 62 came a talking point when McCann beat Tardif to a long crossfield ball, and shot past the keeper from a narrow angle.  A Guernsey player stuck a foot out and appeared to put the ball into his own net, but Tardif somehow scrambled it away and the goal was not given.

Chatham did take the lead a minute later, though, when McCann’s cross found Humber unmarked.  Humber turned provider for the third goal on 69, when his cross found Joe Bingham whose hard hit shot gave Tardif no chance, and one minute later he completed his hat trick.  He received the ball from Charles Ofosu-Hene and saw his first shot saved, but the ball bounced back to him and this time he put it past the keeper for Chatham’s fourth goal.

Chatham had scored three goals in seven minutes, and Guernsey knew they were beaten.  Nicholls made a good save in the closing minutes, while Ehibhanre Izokun went close after a good run in added time, but it was Humber’s hat trick which ensured Chatham the win./
