Chatham Town held promotion chasing Hythe Town for 88 minutes, but two late goals kept the home club in the playoff positions.

The first half was uneventful.  A long punt by Laurence Collins forced a save from Hythe keeper Mant, while Collins was also on hand at the other hand to head clear following a Hythe corner.  Jack Bradshaw saved comfortably when Hythe won a free kick on half way and chose to shoot at goal, but genuine chances were few indeed.  Chatham suffered a blow when Liam Hickey was forced out of the game with a recurrence of an old injury on the half hour, but even so there was little to choose between the teams.Hythe looked dangerous in the early part of the second half.  Hythe broke from midfield six minutes into the half, but there was no one to get on the end of a good cross.  Former Chatham player David Botterill, who has recently joined Hythe from Faversham Town, hit a fierce shot from a corner but an excellent save from Jack Bradshaw saw him deflect the ball to safety.

Then on 62 minutes, and despite having spent most of the half defending, Chatham took the lead after a ball down the centre of the pitch found new signing Hassan Ibrahim.  Ibrahim played it on to George Humber who took his chance well to put Chatham ahead.

Unfortunately, a minute later Jon Difford became the second Chatham player unable to continue, and his departure from the game gave the Chatham midfield an unfamiliar look.

Chatham’s lead was to last only three minutes.  Hythe won a free kick just outside the Chatham area, elected to shoot, and although Bradshaw did get a hand to the shot he could not keep it out.

A good save from Bradshaw kept the teams level two minutes later, while Hythe went on to miss badly on 77.  Chatham too created chances though, and a Ricky Gundry shot five minutes from time was only just wide.  With 88 minutes on the clock Chatham were on track to collect a very creditable point, but alas it was not to be.  Two goals in three minutes secured the points for Hythe, and they look like strong playoff candidates.  In better news for Chatham Town though, Walton and Hersham’s defeat on Sunday means that Chatham are now mathematically safe from relegation.
