Match Report

Referee: Mr A Waters      Attendance: 322

Chatham Town were the better side for the first half, but Worthing took the lead against the run of play and eventually won comfortably in front of Chatham’s biggest home crowd of the season.

Ricky Gundry put George Humber through on goal with just four minutes played, but Humber was adjudged to have committed a foul when he appeared to have won a corner.  Richard Davies and Humber did win a corner five minutes later, and that corner found the head of Gundry – but his attempt on goal went wide.

Joe Loft slipped inside the penalty area on 14 when he might otherwise have had a shooting chance, and ten minutes later he saw a shot saved.  Humber won Chatham another corner ten minutes before half time, but 39 minutes had been played before Worthing won their first corner of the match.

For the first time they looked dangerous, and two minutes later they hit the post.  Still Chatham created chances though, and the ball just ran away from Kwarbena Osei inside the Worthing area.  But just before half time, Worthing took the lead when Dawes scored from a narrow angle.

Seven minutes into the second half, Worthing gave the ball away on the edge of their own area trying to dribble from defence.  It fell for Loft, but his shot was off target, and Worthing then began to show just why they are third in the table.

A good run down the left wing on 55 led to a header against the bar, but Chatham soon fought back.  An Austin Edwards shot won a corner, which led to a goalmouth scramble and several Chatham shots were blocked before the goalkeeper eventually gathered the ball.

An excellent Jack Bradshaw save denied Worthing a goal after 73 at the expense of a corner, but a header from that corner hit the bar and was followed up by Pope to put the Rebels two ahead.  Sparks added a third two minutes later, and the game was over as a contest.

Jack Jeffrey went close to a consolation goal in added time but his shot was tipped away for a corner, and the final whistle soon blew. But there is no disgrace in losing to a high flying team such as Worthing, and other results mean that Chatham have lost no real ground as they fight for safety.
