Jack Bradshaw saved a penalty as Chatham Town secured a valuable point away to promotion chasing Dorking Wanderers.

Dorking Wanderers play in red and white shirts with blue shorts, which meant that Chatham could wear neither all red nor all blue and were forced to wear an unfamiliar outfit of blue shirts with red shorts.  On a cold afternoon with a brisk northeasterly wind, and on a rather bare pitch with a pronounced slope side to side, it was unsurprising that neither team was at its best.

Bradshaw was forced into a save after just five minutes, and Laurence Collins completed the defensive work after he had parried the ball.  But this was one of only two genuine chances that Wanderers had in the first half; the other saw Wanderers’ Tolfrey shoot wide after rounding the keeper.

Chatham too had few chances in the first half.  Richard Davies had one shot saved and saw a free kick fly just past the top corner, and Kwarbena Osei too had a shot saved.  The game was goalless at half time, but Chatham were happy enough with that scoreline away to the team lying second in the league.

The game came to life only in its final twenty minutes.  George Humber’s effort on 66 minutes was saved as was Jack Jeffrey’s two minutes later, while with 71 played Wanderers did have the ball in the net only to see that an offside flag had already been raised.

It began to look as if Chatham would get a point, but ten minutes from time Wanderers were awarded a penalty for a foul on the right hand edge of the penalty area.  Tolfrey stepped up to take the penalty, and Bradshaw correctly guessed that he would shoot downhill and blocked the spot kick.  He immediately saved a rebound shot as well, at the expense of a corner, and Chatham were then able to clear their lines.

In added time, Khari Oriogun took the ball down the right before passing to Fred Obasa, but Obasa’s shot was saved and the final whistle blew seconds later.  The game itself will perhaps not live long in the memory, but no club is ever going to complain about bringing back a point from their trip to the team in second place!
