Chatham Town suffered their heaviest defeat of the season when they lost 4-0 at Corinthian-Casuals.

On a cold day when rain fell on and off, and on a heavy pitch that some referees might not have passed, it is hardly surprising that long periods of the game were scrappy.

Chatham’s first real chance came after 15 minutes when they won a free kick a few yards outside the Casuals area, but Laurence Collins’ effort was blocked by the wall.  Luke Medley had a shot blocked on the half hour and Jack Bradshaw made a comfortable save five minutes later, but that was as near as either team had come to scoring.

Casuals took the lead after 45 minutes when Emmanuel Akokhia got on the end of a cross from the left.  Chatham came close to equalising in the minute’s added time at the end of the first half though, but Khari Oriogun’s shot from William Johnson-Cole’s cross was saved.

The first half had been scrappy but fairly even, and there seemed no reason why Chatham could not still take something from the game.  Unfortunately though, the second half was rather different.  Ben King doubled Casuals’ lead two minutes after the restart with a free kick which was misjudged by Bradshaw and went in off the post, and Casuals had two good chances to extend their lead further within the next ten minutes.

Ricky Gundry came within inches of meeting Luke Medley’s cross after 58 minutes but the ball eluded him, and five minutes later substitute Fred Obasa took the ball into the area but ran into a crowd of Casuals players before he had a chance to shoot.

The game was over as a contest when Niall Wright scored Casuals’ third on 72, although George Humber did have a shot on target for Chatham six minutes later but it was comfortably cleared.  The crowd had started to drift towards the bar and the car park by the time that Shaun Okojie added a fourth for Casuals in injury time, and the final whistle soon followed.  Chatham must put this poor performance out of their heads and move on to the next game.
