Match Report

Referee: Mr P Rowley     Attendance: 117

Khari Oriogun scored the only goal of the game after 71 minutes as Chatham Town beat East Grinstead Town to record only their third home win of the season.

On a very windy afternoon, chances were at a premium throughout the game.  A Chatham free kick after 14 minutes led to Ricky Gundry having the game’s first genuine shot, but it was off target.  Jack Bradshaw was forced into a save when East Grinstead had their first real shot five minutes later, but for the rest of the first half it was all Chatham.A free kick on 26 led to an Oriogun shot which had keeper Howard beaten, but it went just wide.  A Liam Hickey free kick was on target but comfortably caught by Howard, while some spectators thought Gundry had scored late in the half but he had in fact hit the side netting.  In added time, a high shot from Luke Medley landed on the roof of the net only inches behind the bar.

Both teams were struggling with the wind, and both teams were struggling to retain possession.  It seemed likely that if either team was to score it would come from a defensive mistake, and so it proved.

Medley had a shot well saved early in the second half, while a Richard Davies free kick on the hour too was saved.  Howard could only block Fred Obasa’s shot two minutes later with his shins, but his defenders cleared the loose ball before any Chatham player could collect it.

The goal came after 71 minutes, and did indeed stem from a mistake.  A through ball seemed to pose no particular danger, and Howard came out of his goal to collect it.  But the ball slipped through his fingers, and landed nicely for Oriogun who gratefully accepted the simple chance.

East Grinstead had their best spell of the game in the final ten minutes and did win a couple of corners, but no serious questions were asked of Bradshaw as the defence dealt with everything that East Grinstead had to offer.  The final corner four minutes into added time was easily cleared by Chatham, and in fact led to a break which nearly saw them add a late second goal.

This game was not a classic, but Chatham Town will be particularly satisfied to have beaten a team managed by former Chatham assistant Matt Longhurst.
