Chatham Town had chances to win on their first ever visit to Carshalton Athletic, but will be reasonably satisfied with a 1-1 draw away to a team eight places above them in the league table.

Carshalton Athletic sacked their manager on Thursday morning and appointed a replacement later the same day, and made a tentative start to their first match under new management.  Chatham won the game’s first corner after just five minutes, and although the Carshalton defence did clear the ball they looked uncertain about it.  For a while it almost looked as if they had set out to play for 0-0, but after 19 minutes they took the lead against the run of play.

The goal came from a free kick on half way, which was played long down the right wing, and then crossed to Miller who scored all too easily.  Carshalton had the ball in the net again five minutes later but it was rightly disallowed for a foul on Chatham goalkeeper Ryan Nicholls, and then on 27 Chatham gave the ball away in their penalty area but were grateful that the resulting shot was a weak one.

Luke Medley shot from the half way line on 32 and his effort was on target, but it was comfortably saved by keeper Colquhoun.  Three minutes later though, Medley did equalise with an outstanding solo goal.  He took the ball midway inside the Carshalton half and into the area, round Colquhoun who had come towards him, and then into the net from a narrow angle.

Chatham had two excellent chances to take the lead within five minutes either side of half time, but once the ball was missed and the other time it was blasted over the bar.  Medley had a shot saved at the second attempt, while Khari Oriogun got on the end of a Medley pass to find himself with only the keeper to beat but shot straight at him.

After a quiet half hour for Carshalton, they came back into the game in its final third.  Twice Nicholls was forced into fine reaction saves to keep out shots from close range, while a last ditch clearance from Liam Hickey kept the teams level on 76.

Chatham won a free kick thirty yards from goal ten minutes from time, and Austin Gacheru shot directly and hit the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.  Carshalton went close from a corner in added time, but the game ended 1-1 which was a fair result.
