One goal in each half gave Chatham Town an ultimately comfortable victory away to Whitstable Town.

On a miserable wet day, the pitch was unsurprisingly rather heavy.  Whitstable came to terms with it first, and forced a save from Jack Bradshaw after just three minutes.  Luke Medley had a chance after 15 minutes but his header was not on target, and six minutes later he provided a cross from which Austin Gacheru headed for goal, but again off target.

Bradshaw had to make an excellent save on 28.  A long range shot was on target, but Bradshaw deflected it onto the bar and away for a corner.  The corner was cleared and within seconds Medley had a shot at the other end, but his effort was saved.

Medley and Ricky Gundry both made long runs on the ball late in the half, and Chatham eventually took the lead in first half stoppage time.  Richard Davies took the ball along the goal line on the right, and with the goalkeeper committed to him Davies then passed infield to Gundry, who was unmarked two yards from goal. Gundry gratefully accepted the simple scoring chance, and Chatham were ahead at half time.

Fred Obasa came on as a sub at half time, and was immediately in the action when his cross presented Gundry with an excellent chance to double Chatham’s lead.  The chance was missed, but the next 20 minutes saw Chatham place the Whitstable goal under constant pressure.  A Davies cross was but inches from finding Gundry, a Medley shot went just wide, while Obasa had a shot saved.

Whitstable had only rare breaks into the Chatham half, but they did shoot just wide on the hour and against the post ten minutes later.  Then on 73 minutes, Chatham extended their lead.  A Gundry shot from five yards out was saved, but Gundry got the ball back and passed inside to Obasa, who scored his first Chatham Town goal with a diving header.

By now Whitstable knew they were beaten, but they did see more of the ball in the final 15 minutes of the game.  Bradshaw dealt comfortably with everything Whitstable had to offer though, while late in the game Gundry headed just over and Obasa saw a shot well saved.

Chatham’s win moves them two places up the table to seventeenth, while Whitstable and Chipstead now look to be well adrift at the bottom.
