Faversham Town scored the game’s only goal after 19 minutes, and so Chatham Town slipped to their fifteenth single defeat of the season.  On the positive side, this game saw Chatham’s biggest home crowd of the season.

After a quiet start, Faversham had the game’s first real chance after 14 minutes, but the shot was straight at Jack Bradshaw who saved comfortably.  A moment later Chatham had a good chance when Richard Davies aimed a long pass at the head of Austin Gacheru, and although Gacheru didn’t reach the ball it ran out of play only inches wide of goal.  But three minutes later Faversham were ahead. The goal came from a long pass to the far post, where Renford Tenyue found himself unmarked and took his header well to put his team in front.

Over the next ten minutes Chatham won a series of corners, but a Reece Butler shot which went wide and a Ricky Gundry effort which was deflected for another corner were the nearest these came to providing a goal.  At the other end, it needed a good save from Bradshaw to stop Faversham adding to their lead five minutes before half time, but when the interval came Faversham still led by that single goal.

Chatham’s best chance of the game came ten minutes into the second half.  Butler’s cross found the head of an unmarked Charles Ofosu-Hene, but Ofosu-Hene didn’t make proper contact with the ball and his header went well wide.

A Faversham shot on 64 went across the face of goal but with no one there to supply a final touch, and much the same thing happened for Chatham two minutes later when a Davies cross caused consternation in the Faversham defence but won Chatham only a corner.   Moments later, Luke Medley came on as a sub to begin his second spell as a Chatham player, and Jack Jeffrey looked lively when he too came on a sub for the last part of the game.

A Davies header was saved on 74, although an offside flag was then raised in any case, and in added time at the end of the game a nice ball from Jeffrey found space close to the penalty spot, but no one was on hand for a shot at goal at the end of a frustrating afternoon for Chatham.  There’s not much difference in ability between these two teams, but Faversham lie seventh and are chasing a playoff place while Chatham lie nineteenth.
