Two first half goals gave Chatham Town three valuable points away to Walton Casuals, but they had to withstand a spirited second half performance by their hosts to secure them.

Chatham Town had all the possession in the game’s opening minutes, but they had to wait 12 minutes for their first serious shot.  It came from Charles Ofosu-Hene following the game’s first corner and was to win Chatham another corner, but Walton Casuals were eventually able to clear their lines.

Chatham did take the lead four minutes later.  An exchange of passes between Austin Gacheru and Richard Davies on the right side of the area seemed to have run out of room, but the ball was played across the box to find Ricky Gundry.  Gundry’s volley from fifteen yards out went straight in, and so Chatham were ahead.

A Liam Hickey free kick on 37 caused panic in the Walton Casuals defence but they were still able to scramble it clear, and then for the final minutes of the half it was Walton Casuals who put the Chatham goal under sustained pressure for the first time.

Even so, Chatham doubled their lead in first half injury time.  Good work by Gundry led to Gacheru collecting the ball close to the penalty spot, and Gacheru looped it over the unsighted keeper’s head into the goal.

Two minutes into the second half Walton Casuals appealed for a penalty and didn’t get it, but their luck with marginal decisions was to change.  For Chatham, Jon Difford saw a straight red card for a foul a yard outside the penalty area, and the resulting free kick forced a good save from Bradshaw.  Walton Casuals’ Cheadle was fortunate not to see either card for an altercation with Reece Butler, and 15 minutes from time his team was awarded a penalty for an apparent foul by Butler.  Ironically, it was Cheadle who scored from the spot.

The Walton Casuals keeper dropped a high Hickey free kick on 84 but was able to recover the ball and clear, while a Chatham break on the stroke of time saw Kwarbena Osei set up Gacheru for a shot which went just wide.  But it was Walton Casuals who had most of the possession in the closing minutes, and it needed a combination of a few poor final passes, some solid Chatham defence, and an excellent Bradshaw save from close range to ensure that Chatham took the points.
