Chatham Town put up a good performance for most of Saturday’s game against Whyteleafe, but still ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline.

Whyteleafe were first to settle on a windy afternoon, and took the lead after just six minutes.  The goal came from a free kick just outside the Chatham penalty area, which Francis put in off the far post.  They went close again ten minutes later, but then Chatham dominated the rest of the first half.

A corner on 20 minutes led to a Kieron McCann header which was blocked, and soon afterwards Corey Holder’s header was well saved by Leafe keeper Vose, who is on loan to them from Brighton and Hove Albion.  Vose caught a McCann corner which was heading straight for goal, and then on 32 Chatham might have had two penalties in the space of a few seconds.  The ball had run loose inside the Leafe penalty area, and Charles Ofosu-Hene appeared to be brought down twice as he chased that ball, but the referee was unmoved.

Joe Loft’s shot on 35 was saved, as was an Austin Edwards free kick on 42, and so Whyteleafe’s early goal was enough to see them still in the lead at half time.

Whyteleafe missed a golden chance to increase their lead six minutes into the second half, but within a minute Chatham had another chance to equalise.  They won a free kick five yards outside the Leafe area, and it led to a Ricky Gundry header which hit the post.  There was a spooky moment on the hour when a Leafe clearance went right out of the premises and into the cemetery – and someone sent it straight back into the ground!

After winning a series of corners to no avail, Chatham equalised on 65 minutes.  The goal came from a neat exchange of passes between Ofosu-Hene and Edwards inside the area, culminating with Ofosu-Hene scoring from ten yards out.

Leafe were back in front five minutes later though, through a goal well taken by veteran striker Dsane.  A Liam Hickey free kick all along the ground fifteen minutes from time wasn’t far off the mark, but there were few genuine chances in the closing period as Leafe held on for the win.
