Match Report

Referee: Mr C Farrell     Attendance: 50

Austin Gacheru scored the only goal of the game after 70 minutes as Chatham Town won 1-0 at Chipstead. Liam Hickey returned to the Chatham team after a lengthy injury layoff and playedthe full 90 minutes, while new signing Ricky Gundry took a place on the bench.

Although Chipstead had the game’s first shot it soon became clear that their defence was fragile, although their very competent Serbian goalkeeper made up for many of the shortcomings. George Humber put a shot over the bar from eight yards out on 11 minutes, and two minutes later he had a shot well saved by that keeper. A long ball forward found Austin Gacheru on his own after 28, but his shot was again well saved, while Kieron McCann headed over from Gacheru’s cross on 36.

Chipstead created two good chances just before half time, but Chatham keeper Ryan Nicholls did well to deflect a hard hit shot for a corner. That corner led to another Chipstead chance which was badly missed, and so the game was goalless at half time.

Chatham won a corner right from the kick off in the second half but could not capitalise, and five minutes later McCann was crudely brought down after he had got onto a long ball forward midway inside the Chipstead half. Nicholls was called upon to make a rare save on the hour, and then four minutes later Chatham had their best chance so far.

Charles Ofosu-Hene seemed to have lost the ball on the edge of the Chipstead area, but a fortunate deflection off a defender gave it back to him. He took it round the keeper and shot, and as the ball was creeping towards goal both Humber and a defender converged on it. The ball ran out of play inches wide of goal and Chatham won a corner, but could not convert it into a goal. On 70 minutes though, Chatham did take the lead. Joe Loft’s cross from the right found Gacheru close to the penalty spot, and he was able to turn and shoot to put Chatham ahead.

Chipstead saw more of the ball than Chatham did during the last part of the game, but several times the final ball let them down and Nicholls’ goal was rarely seriously threatened. On a bumpy pitch and on a day which become increasingly windy this was not the most elegant of wins, but you’re always happy with three away points.
