Match Report

On a freezing afternoon, Chatham Town fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Hythe Town.  To add insult to injury, Hythe Town’s winner was scored by a former Chatham favourite.

Although Hythe had the game’s first two shots, neither of them on target, Chatham soon took control.  After just eight minutes a dangerous cross from Kieron McCann was collected by Hythe keeper Mant, and two minutes later Chatham were in front.

Charles Ofosu-Hene’s crossfield ball found George Humber on the right hand edge of the penalty area, and Humber shot at goal.  A Hythe player stretched out a foot to the ball and would have put it into his own net, but McCann was on hand to get a final touch and make sure of the goal.

McCann put another chance over the bar and a long range Richard Davies shot wasn’t far off, but Hythe equalised on 27 minutes.  A defensive error allowed an unmarked Sawyer to shoot from close to the penalty spot, and although Ryan Nicholls got a hand to his fiercely hit shot he could not keep it out.

With 35 minutes played, a McCann cross seemed to be off target, but it caught the stiff breeze and ended up missing the top corner by only a few inches.  Even so, Hythe took the lead two minutes later when Alfie May shot from a very narrow angle on the left and saw his shot go in off the far post.

As darkness fell and the day grew even colder, chances were few in the second half.  Nicholls did well to save from Hythe’s Cook after he managed to get behind the Chatham defence, while for Chatham Austin Gacheru saw a shot saved.  A dribble from May led to a shot which Nicholls again saved well, but the game only came back to life in the closing five minutes.

Chatham won a free kick a yard outside the Hythe area on 85, and Davies’ shot was on target but deflected away for a corner. Keeper Mant dropped another Chatham corner as normal time ran out, and in the resulting scramble the ball hit the post and was cleared off the line, before running out for yet another Chatham corner.  Even Nicholls came up for that corner, and indeed for another which immediately followed it, but eventually Hythe cleared the ball and held on for a 2-1 win.
