The Pilot Field in Hastings is a bit of a favourite of mine.  It has the biggest stand in the entire Isthmian league, you can still see where the speedway track once stood even though no one has raced motorbikes there since 1949, and Hastings United get good crowds for a club which has had a lean few years.  What’s more, Chatham Town have a pretty good record there – but in the wind and the rain on the Sussex coast this Saturday, the only goal came from a first half free kick as we fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Chatham had the game’s first shot on target, and it came from an unlikely source.  A clearance from Chatham goalkeeper Ryan Nicholls caught the wind, and Hastings keeper Pelling had to backpedal and dive behind himself to avoid looking rather foolish!  Richard Davies forced another save from Pelling with a free kick from 30 yards ten minutes later, while George Humber’s cross led to a corner from which Kieron McCann’s shot was batted away by the keeper.

Hastings took the lead after 25 minutes, when a free kick from 10 yards outside the penalty area went straight in.  The free kick was well taken by Cruttwell, but the foul which led to it being awarded was needless.  Hastings had several chances to increase their lead before half time.  First a speculative cross hit the bar, then a quick break after a Chatham corner came to nothing forced a good save from Nicholls, and he made two more good save in first half injury time to ensure that Chatham turned around just one goal down.

Omari Hibbert’s shot all along the ground on 57 minutes wasn’t far wide, while a Joe Bingham free kick on 75 won a corner, but this came to nothing and Hastings created a chance of their own on the break.  There was still a way back into the game for Chatham, but ten minutes from time, Joe Loft saw a straight red card for a foul just outside the penalty area.  Chatham were down to ten, and the resulting free kick hit the post.

Five minutes later Chatham had a good chance to equalise in a goalmouth scramble, but with keeper Pelling beaten the ball was cleared off the line and Hastings preserved their lead.  Hastings’ strikers completely mishit several chances to put their team further ahead, and the final whistle saw Hastings the winners with the day’s only goal.
