Match Report

Referee: Mr D Austin      Attendance: 85.

Andrew Dalhouse and Austin Edwards scored the goals as Chatham Town picked up three useful points with a 2-1 win at Walton and Hersham.

The home club’s pitch is poor. It was bumpy and the grass seemed not to have been cut for some weeks, and so it’s unsurprising that Chatham took a little while to settle into the game. Walton and Hersham had the game’s first shot on 6 minutes but it was off target, and then Chatham took the lead on the quarter hour.

The goal came when Chatham were awarded a free kick ten yards outside the penalty area. Laurence Collins and Andrew Dalhouse both stood over the ball, and it was Dalhouse who took the kick and put it straight into the net with goalkeeper Fallon never moving. Dalhouse had a good chance to increase the lead five minutes later when Fallon rushed out of his area but missed the ball, but his shot went over the bar.

Walton’s equaliser on 25 was spectacular. Right back Wallace launched a speculative ball forward from ten yards inside his own half, and to everyone’s amazement it landed up in the back of the net. There’s not much you can do about that; if he can do it again in a hundred attempts then he should be playing at a much higher level.

Collins and Joe Bingham both had shots cleared for corners over the next ten minutes, while a Kieron McCann effort from the edge of the area hit the post. Chatham did regain the lead before half time though, when Austin Edwards slotted the ball low into the corner, again from outside the area.

Four minutes into the second half, Collins and Walton’s Battie had a clash of heads which the referee ruled accidental. Neither was able to continue in the game and Collins, bleeding from the head, had to go to hospital.

Midway through the half we had the odd sight of substitute Siao Blackwood being given offside when five yards inside his own half, and then on 74 Chatham might have had a penalty. A Dalhouse free kick from just outside the area was dropped by goalkeeper Fallon, who then appeared to bring Blackwood down as he ran for the loose ball.

Walton put the Chatham goal under pressure for the closing ten minutes but rarely looked much like scoring, and so it was Chatham who ran out the deserving winners.
