Match Report

Referee: C.Farrell     Attendance: 153

A rather frustrating afternoon saw Chatham Town lose 1-0 to Carshalton Athletic in their first league game under acting manager Matt Solly.

Joe Bingham hit the side netting from Laurence Collins’ cross after just 7 minutes, and a Richard Davies header following a free kick was saved four minutes later.  Chatham looked well on top, but then Carshalton took the lead rather against the run of play.  The goal was well taken by Higgs from the edge of the area, but Ryan Nicholls got a hand to his fiercely hit shot and another day it might have stayed out.

Andrew Dalhouse seems to attract shirt pullers every week, and today was no exception.  He still managed to win Chatham a corner on 18 minutes while being held back, and on 27 Chatham might have had a penalty when he received the same kind of attention.  The referee thought otherwise though, just as he thought otherwise when Chatham appeared to have won a corner minutes later.  Even Carshalton goalkeeper Colquhoun looked puzzled by that decision.

Chatham won a succession of corners late in the first half, and then just before half time Kieron McCann turned and shot from a narrow angle, only to see his shot hit the corner of the goal frame on the far side.  The very last kick of the half was a Collins free kick which had the keeper beaten but went inches wide.

A crude challenge on Corey Holder three minutes into the second half saw only a yellow card shown to the offending Carshalton player, but fortunately it was an isolated incident.  A McCann shot on the hour was off target, and there fewer chances in the second half than there had been in the first.

Summers will feel that he should have secured the game for Carshalton on 71, when the ball broke to him with only Nicholls to beat and he hit the post.  Carshalton squandered two more chances over the next ten minutes but five minutes from time, Chatham won a free kick a yard outside the penalty area, and Collins’ free kick found Davies who hit the bar.

Four minutes of added time were played and Chatham spent most of them in the Carshalton penalty area.  No goal came though, and so that first half goal was enough to give Carshalton the points.
