Match Report

In a game when both goals came from corners, Chatham Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Peacehaven and Telscombe on Saturday.

Peacehaven won the first corner of the afternoon after 6 minutes, and it led to the first goal when Burton found himself unmarked and was able to head in from close range.  George Humber nearly got on the end of a long ball on 14 but it just eluded him, and Chatham’s first corner soon followed but was cleared by the defence.  Two different Peacehaven players tried long range shots midway through the half but both efforts were easily saved by Ryan Nicholls, while Kieron McCann went close from Humber’s cros Os on 33.

A minute later Chatham won a corner.  The ball was played back to Joe Loft standing close to the penalty spot, and his well taken shot put the teams level.  Humber hobbled out of the game shortly before half time to add to Chatham’s long injury list, and the teams turned round with the match in the balance.

Chatham made a bright start to the second half.  A foul on Andrew Dalhouse led to a free kick a yard outside the area four minutes in, but although the shot appeared to deflect off a Peacehaven player a goal kick was awarded.  On the hour, Peacehaven keeper Winterton came rushing out of his area to race McCann to a long ball, and succeeded in clearing the danger.  But five minutes later the same thing happened again, and this time Winterton collided with his own player and both fell awkwardly.  The ball ran towards the byline, and it just eluded McCann – who had to run around the two players on the ground – and ran out of play a yard wide of goal.

Laurence Collins went close with a header following a corner on 74, and the keeper dropped a Dalhouse shot on 80 but was able to recover it before any Chatham player could get to it.  Peacehaven too had chances late in the game, but one ended with a shot well off target while a good dribble which beat two defenders culminated in a weak shot which Nicholls comfortably saved.

Richard Davies was brough to ground a yard outside the area in added time, but the referee saw no foul and soon blew the final whistle.
