Match Report

After the original game on New Year’s Day was abandoned following the serious injury to Matt Solly, Chatham Town returned to Thurrock on 27 January.  They led at half time, but ended up losing 4-2.

Thurrock took the lead after 8 minutes after being awarded a penalty.  Ryan Nicholls actually saved Waters’ spot kick, but could only clear the ball as far as the penalty taker who was able to collect the rebound and score.  Chatham equalised on 21 though, when the Thurrock defence failed to clear a free kick allowing Austin Edwards to score in the bottom corner.  Better was to come ten minutes later, when Chatham won a corner.  Joe Bingham was allowed a free header, and although the Thurrock keeper got a hand to the ball he could not keep it out.

Kieron McCann had a chance to extend Chatham’s lead shortly before half time but was unable to capitalise, and at this point Thurrock decided that they must throw caution to the wind.  They made an early substitution and brought on a third striker, and this move enabled them to ask more questions of the Chatham defence. That paid off ten minutes into the second half, when Thurrock won a corner which the unfortunate Liam Hickey turned into the net.  Seven minutes later Thurrock went ahead.  They were awarded their second penalty of the evening, a decision which looked harsh, and this time Waters scored at the first attempt.

Thurrock’s fourth goal in the closing minutes came from what was technically a foul by Chatham keeper Ryan Nicholls, but one which referees very rarely give.  A Thurrock attack had broken down and Nicholls had the ball, and in clearing it he was ruled to have handled the ball inches outside the penalty area.  This happens a dozen times in every game, but on this occasion Thurrock were awarded a free kick inches outside the penalty area – and from it, Waters completed his hat trick.

So an ultimately disappointing result for Chatham, but the performance gave Kevin Watson plenty to be pleased about.
