Chatham Town bowed out of the FA Trophy in the rain on Tuesday night after a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Worthing.

Chatham made the early chances.  Joe Loft’s first time shot was saved after just four minutes, and then five minutes later the same player got onto a long ball forward and cross to Austin Gacheru, but Gacheru’s shot was off target.  On 13 it was Gacheru’s turn to play a long ball across the field, and it came close to finding Corey Holder at the far post.  Then it started to rain.

Since Worthing is a coastal town, perhaps they are more used to water than we are in Chatham – and they seemed happier in the wet than the dry.  A shot from the edge of the area went just over the bar with 25 minutes played, and then Tom Wellham was called on to make a good save from a free kick on 35.  A minute later Worthing appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty, and they hit the bar five minutes before half time, but although Worthing had dominated this quarter of the game they had nothing to show for it.

The rain relented during the interval, and if the second quarter had been Worthing’s the third was definitely Chatham’s.  Four minutes into the half they had a rare free kick inside the penalty area after the Worthing goalkeeper picked up a back pass, but were unable to capitalise on it.  The keeper rushed out of his area to race Gacheru to a long ball on the hour; neither made clean contact with the ball, but the keeper did enough to clear the danger.  A Gacheru shot flashed just past the top corner on 67, but then the rain returned even heavier than before.

Wellham did well to clear the ball for a corner after a Worthing shot took a deflection on 69, but on 82 minutes Worthing scored what was to be the only goal of the game, when Omar Bugiel headed home following a corner.  Chatham made two late substitutions in the attempt to secure an equaliser, but none came and so it is Worthing who will travel to Hendon in the Second Round Qualifying.
