Match Report

Chatham Town made the long trip to the Sussex coast on Saturday to take on Worthing in the FA Trophy, but after scoring first they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Although Worthing had the game’s first shot, comfortably saved by Tom Wellham, Chatham had the first two corners.  Genuine chances were few, but Chatham came close to scoring directly from a corner while Worthing goalkeeper Fagan was forced to punch away a Kane Phillip cross on the half hour.  A Worthing free kick from 35 yards out flew just past the top corner five minutes before half time, but it was Chatham who had the best chance of the half in injury time.  The ball broke to Phillip with only the goalkeeper to beat, but his shot went just wide and the game was goalless at half time.

Five minutes into the second half, substitute Joe Left played the ball to Austin Gacheru.  Gacheru took the ball into the area and shot, and was unamused when the referee awarded a goal kick rather than a corner even though it appeared to be a Worthing player who touched the ball last.  Two minutes later though, a push on Greg Benbow saw Chatham awarded a penalty.  The Worthing players were equally unamused by the decision, but Laurence Collins stepped up to take the kick and duly put Chatham ahead.

The next twenty minutes were played mostly in the Chatham half, but a combination of careless play in the final third and solid Chatham defending meant that Worthing rarely posed a serious threat to Wellham’s goal.  On 67 though, they were level when Liam Hickey attempted to head back to Wellham, but was unfortunate enough to head the ball over the keeper and into his own net.  A Worthing free kick hit the bar on 71, and they missed badly from close range three minutes later.  But after having the Chatham goal under siege for ten minutes, Worthing appeared to accept that the game was destined to be drawn.

Gacheru had other ideas though, and twice went close as the game moved into six minutes of added time.  But there were no goals in those six minutes and the match did indeed end all square.  On this evidence there’s not much to choose between these two teams, and they will try again at Maidstone Road on Tuesday evening.  Extra time and penalties will be played if necessary.
