Match Report

Chatham Town led for a time in an entertaining game at Brentwood Town last Saturday, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw.  Both teams will be reasonably happy with the result, though, since Brentwood are now guaranteed a playoff place while Chatham are all but safe from relegation.

Brentwood made the better start and hit the bar in the first minute.  They should have scored after 10 but a shot sailed yards over the bar, and it was no surprise when they took the lead midway through the first half.  A long ball found Stanley with only Ryan Nicholls to beat, and he took the ball around the Chatham keeper and into the empty net.

Chances were few for the rest of the first half, but Chatham equalised within a minute of the restart.  Connor French’s pass found George Humber, who scored from close to the penalty spot.  For the next twenty minutes it was Chatham who dominated, while Brentwood seemed strangely satisfied for the scores to remain level.

Midway through the half, Chatham took the lead which was no more than they deserved.  The goal came after Chatham won a free kick just outside the area.  Joe Bingham stepped up to take the free kick, and put it straight into the net with the goalkeeper scarcely moving.

Brentwood were awarded a penalty after 81 minutes when substitute Bantick was brought down by Nicholls.  Top scorer Stanley took the penalty, and beat the diving Nicholls to bring his team level.

There were no further goals, and other results meant that both teams were reasonably satisfied with the outcome.  It would need a double figure defeat for Chatham and a double figure win for Barkingside in their respective last games for Chatham to finish in the bottom three now, and it’s extremely unlikely to happen.
