Match Report

Referee: Mr C Myatt      Attendance: 177

Chatham Town completely dominated for the first third of the game, but still came away from Bromley having lost 3-0 to Cray Wanderers.

Connor French had seen two efforts blocked by Cray keeper Colquhoun before the game was five minutes old, and Kieron McCann had also won a corner after he turned and shot.  After ten minutes Colquhoun caught a Liam Hickey free kick but landed awkwardly under challenge and needed treatment, and he did look rather uncertain for a short while thereafter.  French had a header saved following a corner on the quarter hour, a Liam Hickey free kick went inches over the bar on 23, and a McCann shot went just wide with half an hour played.  Chatham had done everything except score, but it was Cray Wanderers who made most of the running for the last part of the first half.  They couldn’t find the net either though, so the game was goalless at half time.

Cray had a period of pressure at the start of the second half and forced a good save from Ryan Nicholls on 49, and moments later the crowd thought they had scored when in fact they had won a corner.  Chatham were soon back in the game though, and won two corners in the space of a minute.  A French dribble led to another corner on the hour, but then with 63 minutes played Cray Wanderers scored.

The scorer was recently signed striker Carl Rook, who blasted the ball into the roof of the net following a corner, and sadly there rarely seemed to be a way back for Chatham once Cray had taken the lead.  One way back would have been from the penalty spot, and six minutes from time Chatham might have had a penalty.  George Humber came to ground inside the area after contact from a Cray player, but the referee decided that no foul had been committed.  You could spend hours debating whether he was right, but it was the sort of decision that usually goes the way of the home team and so it did on this occasion.

To add insult to injury, Cray scored two more goals in the closing minutes of the game.  The first was scored by Whitely when he was given too much space in the middle of the Chatham half, and the third by Teniola from a break deep into added time.
