Match Report

Referee: Mr S Brown     Attendance: 125

After a hectic start but with no real chances, Chatham came close to opening the scoring on 18 minutes.  Soham’s defensive wall allowed a Joe Bingham free kick to pass straight through it, but goalkeeper Greygoose, although he had dived the wrong way, stuck out a foot to clear the danger.  Soham took the lead by accident on 24, when Lee Kidman’s attempted clearance kick hit Soham’s Stanley and rebounded off him into the net.  That proved to be Soham’s only shot of the half and it was Chatham who made all the running, but twice Kieron McCann went just wide and so it was the visitors from the Cambridgeshire Fens who led at half time.

Whatever Kevin Watson said during the break clearly worked, because Chatham looked a totally different team in the second half.  George Humber, a striker who has joined from Corinthian and came on as a half time substitute, had a shot well saved by Greygoose within three minutes of the restart.  He could clear the ball only as far as Richard Davies, but Davies’ header went wide.

But within ten minutes of that missed chance, Chatham were ahead.  First McCann beat two players inside the box and shot low into the corner to level the score.  Then five minutes later, a passing move involving Corey Holder and McCann gave Humber another shooting opportunity on his debut.  This time his volley from close to the penalty spot gave Greygoose no chance.

Soham were rather subdued in the second half, and looked like what they are – a side with no chance of either promotion or relegation.  But Chatham wanted a third goal to be sure of the game, and it took a good save from Greygoose to prevent Humber scoring it from distance.  Connor French – another making his debut, having joined from Redhill – saw one shot go wide and a header go over, and while the crowd applauded Joe Loft’s bicycle kick effort it was saved.  Chatham were not to be denied though, and on 88 minutes a Liam Hickey free kick made its way to French, who headed home that third goal.
