Match Report

Referee: Mr S Cheek      Attendance: 110

Lewis Knight scored the only goal as Chatham took three much needed points from their game at home to Maldon and Tiptree two weeks ago.

Both teams created openings in the early minutes, but neither was able to force the opposing goalkeeper into a save.  Chatham looked to have more to offer though, and Kieron McCann twice put dangerous balls into the box.  They were aimed at new signing Scott Reilly – a striker with a good record in Army football – and both times he was beaten to them by just inches.  Late in the half, Maldon had a good spell and spent several minutes around the Chatham area, but the eventual shot sailed yards over the bar.

A Joe Bingham shot a minute before half time went wide, and following the resulting goal kick Maldon launched a high ball into the Chatham area which could have put Ryan Nicholls under pressure.  But Nicholls was fouled as the ball came down and so the chance was lost, and the game was goalless at half time.

Chatham won a free kick an inch outside the penalty area ten minutes into the second half.  It came to nothing though, and enabled Maldon to break. A defensive miskick left Nicholls with work to do, but the ball was safely cleared.  A Chatham corner on the hour forced a save from Maldon keeper Darren Behcet, making his second visit of the season to Maidstone Road having also played here for Cray Wanderers, but a goalless draw was beginning to look likely.

That all changed on 71 minutes, when Chatham won a free kick level with the edge of the penalty area, but close by the right hand touchline.  Liam Hickey’s free kick was touched on by Lewis Knight, and the Maldon defence was static as the ball rolled into the far corner of the net.

Maldon had twenty minutes to find an equaliser but rarely looked like doing it.  Their best chance seemed to be to kick every available ball out of the ground so that the game could not continue, and they did come close to doing it!  Austin Edwards, on as a second half substitute, showed a couple of flashes of excellence in the closing minutes, but there was no addition to the score.

The game may not have been great watching at times, but Chatham Town won it – and at this stage of the season, that has to be the priority.
