Chatham Town fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Romford last Saturday.  Romford currently play at Thurrock’s Ship Lane ground near the Lakeside shopping centre, and even the presence of Ade Yusuff – who spent the afternoon in the dugout after finding himself with a free day – could not change Chatham’s unwanted record of never having won at this venue.

The game started brightly for Chatham.  Kieron McCann and Joe Bingham combined to win Chatham the game’s first corner after six minutes, and three minutes later they won another corner which gave Simon Glover a shooting chance.  His shot flashed over the bar, but Romford had yet to venture into the Chatham half.

With 16 minutes played, though, Romford were awarded a penalty after their player went down rather easily under Greg Benbow’s challenge.  For the third time in his brief Chatham career, Ryan Nicholls saved the penalty kick, but he could not prevent Romford’s Seymour scoring from the rebound.  Chatham had a good chance a minute later when Romford goalkeeper Omand was caught out of position, but McCann’s shot went wide.  Worse followed five minutes later, when Romford doubled their lead through Hazlewood.  The goal was well taken from thirty yards out, but there had seemed to be no danger.

For the next fifteen minutes Chatham looked the better side, but all too often the final ball failed to ask a serious question of the Romford defence.  Romford were quiet but for a good five minute spell just before half time, while a Chatham break right at the end of the half saw Richard Davies shoot just wide with the keeper beaten.

Chatham brought themselves right back into the game by pulling a goal back eight minutes into the second half.  Bingham was the scorer from the penalty spot after Davies had been brought down by keeper Omand.  For the next half hour Chatham looked the more likely to score, but they could not capitalise on Omand dropping a cross, while Bingham headed over from a Gary Tilley corner.  Five minutes from time, Corey Holder aimed a long pass at an unmarked Tilley, but the keeper just beat the Chatham veteran to the ball.

Chatham continued to press for an equaliser into injury time, but this allowed Romford to break and score a third goal in the dying seconds of the game.
