Match Report

Referee: Mr A Parker      Attendance: 95

In difficult conditions on a wet and windy afternoon and with a heavy pitch, Chatham Town and Cheshunt played out a 1-1 draw on the last day of February.

Jack Steventon, another graduate of Chatham’s U21 team given a chance in the first team, set up the first chance of the game with a pass to Austin Edwards.  It was Cheshunt who scored first after 15 minutes though, when Chatham failed to clear a Cheshunt attack.  The ball broke to Ted Llewellyn on the edge of the area, and his well taken shot went in off the far post.

Chatham might have had a penalty within two minutes when Jamie Taylor went to ground under challenge, but the referee did not believe a foul to have been committed.  Even so, Chatham were level on 25 minutes.  Chatham won a free kick in a dangerous position, and although they did not capitalise on it directly the ball found its way to Joe Bingham on the edge of the area.  Bingham shot low to the corner of the net, and beat the left hand of Cheshunt’s diving grey-haired goalkeeper Heywood to bring the teams level.

There were few further chances in the first half, but after a quiet opening to the second half Chatham had two good chances in the space of five minutes either side of the hour.  The first saw Austin Edwards get on the end of Greg Benbow’s cross, but his shot was well saved.  The second fell to Joe Loft, but his shot was over the bar.

A one man Cheshunt break forced a good save from Ryan Nicholls in the Chatham goal on 69, and Nicholls was called into action again a minute later.  Cheshunt looked more dangerous than at any time in the game, but Chatham weathered the storm and soon got back on top.

A good run from Bingham on 78 led to a clash between Anthony Carlton and the Cheshunt keeper.  Carlton received a blow to the face and needed treatment, but while it looked ugly the keeper was legitimately challenging for the ball.  Keeper Heywood completely missed a punch at a Chatham corner on the stroke of full time but Chatham were unable to capitalise, while at the other end a Cheshunt shot in added time sailed over the bar.

A draw was the fair result.  This game was not one which will be remembered as a classic, but these two clubs of modest resources did the best they could under the tricky conditions.
