Match Report

Referee: Mr J Steel      Attendance: 139

Chatham Town had a frustrating day last Saturday, as they were the better side for 80 minutes but still ended up losing 3-1 at Wroxham.

The game started quietly, but Chatham Town were first to settle and the ball spent most of the time in the Wroxham half.  Chatham had the first shot after ten minutes, and although it was saved by Wroxham keeper Pride he looked uncertain.  Even so it was Wroxham who took the lead after 17 minutes, when a moment of indecision in the Chatham defence gave White a chance which he took well.

A Joe Bingham free kick went inches wide on 23, and Chatham’s first corner of the game on the half hour led to a Liam Hickey shot over the bar.  Chatham equalised three minutes later, when Pride got both hands to a Joe Loft shot but could not prevent it trickling towards the goal line.  The referee was unsighted, but his assistant indicated that the ball had crossed the line and so the goal was awarded.  This decision drew an angry response from Wroxham players, but the official was well placed and had no doubt.

Chatham created chance after chance in the third quarter, but could not find the net.  Pride, more impressive in the second half than the first, denied Anthony Carlton when he got onto the end of a long ball, and five minutes later a Bingham shot was well tipped over the bar for a corner.  A long ball on 69 found Kieron McCann with only the keeper to beat.  He was forced wide, but still managed a shot which was cleared off the line.  A Gary Tilley shot was well saved on 77, but then the tide began to turn.

A misdirected defensive header on 79 looked as if it might lead to an own goal, but Ryan Nicholls did well to clear the danger.  Wroxham did take back the lead four minutes later though, when Finch beat Nicholls with a shot low into the corner.  It was Chatham’s turn to be unimpressed, because the officials missed an apparent push by a Wroxham player which should have given Chatham a free kick, but the goal was allowed to stand.  Gordon added a third for Wroxham on 87, while Chatham did have the ball in the net deep into stoppage time but an offside flag had already been raised.

So a frustrating result after the long journey to Norfolk, but there was much in the performance for Kevin to be pleased about.  Our next two games are against teams below us in the table but with games in hand, and six points from these two games would go a long way towards guaranteeing our safety.
