Match Report

Chatham Town came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Thamesmead Town on Valentine’s Day, and by the end of the game it was Thamesmead who were hanging on for a point.

Chatham had three chances in the first ten minutes.  First a Joe Bingham cross was nearly turned into his own net by a Thamesmead defender, then Bingham shot wide, and then a neat sequence of passes ended with a Greg Benbow shot being saved.  Thamesmead’s first shot after 12 minutes was a header over the bar, but two minutes later they were ahead when Coburn found himself unmarked at a corner. Worse was to come for Chatham, when Spencer’s well taken long range shot put Thamesmead two up after 21 minutes.  Within minutes Ryan Nicholls was forced into a good save after a completely mishit Chatham clearance went for a corner, but then Chatham came right back into the game.

Lewis Knight’s high ball into the penalty area was dropped by Thamesmead keeper Rob Budd, but the keeper was adjudged to have been fouled.  Chatham had a setback on 35 though, when Tom Webb was injured in a tackle and had to leave the field on a stretcher; he went to hospital to have his ankle examined.

Eight minutes of added time were played in the first half, and Chatham had the ball throughout.  A Bingham header from a corner was cleared off the line with the keeper beaten, and then Chatham won two free kicks just outside the area in the space of two minutes. Bingham took the second, and although Budd got a hand to it he could not keep it out of the net.

The second half started in the same way, with the Thamesmead goal under constant pressure.  Gary Tilley twice, Liam Hickey and Kieron McCann all had shots saved, and it became clear that Thamesmead keeper Budd was not moving freely.  Twice he received treatment, but after he was unable to get anywhere near two further Chatham shots – one from Bingham which went just wide and one from Anthony Carlton which hit the post – he limped out of the game.

Chatham equalised with 87 minutes played when McCann got on the end of a cross, and Kevin Watson instructed his team to go for a late winner against the uncertain replacement goalkeeper.  It was not to be though, and after five more added minutes the game ended all square.
