Match Report

Chatham Town travelled to Essex once again last Saturday, this time to the village of Great Wakering a few miles outside Southend.  Both the ground and the pitch were better than many in this division, and Chatham won an entertaining game 2-1.

Within a minute of kick off Greg Benbow had needed treatment after being clumsily tackled, and within three minutes he had put Chatham ahead.  A cross came in from the left, and Benbow slid in to slot the ball into the net from five yards out.

Great Wakering looked a reasonable side going forward, but their defence was less convincing.  More than once they gave the ball away in their own penalty area, but when they did break into the Chatham half they kept Ryan Nicholls busy in the Chatham goal, and he produced an excellent diving save to keep Chatham ahead on the half hour.  Kieron McCann took the ball into the Great Wakering penalty area on 37, and was perhaps fouled twice before the ball was cleared, but no penalty was awarded.  Then on the stroke of half time, Joe Bingham took the ball past the keeper and seemed to have an empty net in front of him, but somehow a defender got back to the line to clear the ball.

Clever interplay between McCann and Austin Edwards gave McCann a good chance ten minutes into the second half, but his shot flashed just past the top corner.  Five minutes later it was Great Wakering’s turn to go close, with only another fine save from Nicholls and then a bad miss by a Great Wakering striker keeping Chatham ahead.  Great Wakering continued to look good going forward, while Chatham needed another goal to give themselves some breathing space.  That goal came on 85, when the ball broke to Edwards on the edge of the Great Wakering area.  After several touches and a turn, he saw his chance and fired the ball low into the net to put Chatham two up.

Four minutes later there was another good save from Nicholls after Chatham gave the ball away close to the corner flag, and then in the last minute of normal time Great Wakering were awarded a penalty.  Manager Dan Trenkel, who had come on as a late substitute, took the penalty himself and it was saved by Nicholls, but Trenkel was able to score from the rebound.  Two minutes into injury time Great Wakering won a free kick just outside the Chatham area, their last chance to claim a point they scarcely deserved.  But the shot was blocked, and Chatham came back to Kent with three points.
