Match Report

Referee: Mr S Finnigan      Attendance: 108.

After last week’s poor performance against Aveley, Chatham Town needed something better against Ware today – and they got it, although they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Chatham dominated the first half.  Kieron McCann – playing his first game after rejoining the club from Sevenoaks Town during the week – had a shot blocked eight minutes in, and then after 14 minutes he put Chatham ahead.  The goal came from a high cross from the right wing.  McCann and Ware goalkeeper Madden both went for the ball, and McCann won it.  He then shot past the keeper from a narrow angle for a well taken goal.

McCann was involved in most of Chatham’s best moves during the first half, although it was Liam Hickey who went closest to increasing the lead when he headed just over on 32.  Ware too headed narrowly over the bar but their chances were fewer, and they were a little fortunate to retain eleven players when Christian-Law was only booked for a reckless challenge on Austin Edwards.

Early in the second half Chatham continued to put the Ware goal under pressure, and four minutes into the half Kane Phillip was clumsily brought down a yard outside the area. From the resulting free kick Lewis Knight headed against the bar.  Richard Davies skipped through a tackle on 57, and the shot which followed was parried away for a corner.  That corner led to a crazy thirty seconds in which Chatham shot at least six times, but every time a Ware boot somehow managed to get in the way and eventually they cleared the ball. Greg Benbow’s cross/shot from long range on the left wing went just wide, but while Chatham continued to create more chances Ware began to look dangerous on the break.

The equaliser came on 72 minutes, and was well taken by Adu from outside the area.  That was slightly against the run of play, but both teams now believed that they could win the game and continued to press forward.  Davies limped out of the game in the closing minutes, and within seconds Ware had broken again but shot wide.

Three minutes into what proved to be seven minutes of added time, Chatham won a free kick just inside the Ware half.  Liam Hickey took the free kick and elected to shoot, but his effort was well saved by Madden and the game ended drawn
