Match Report

Referee: Mr S Scott      Attendance: 143

Chatham’s groundstaff and their volunteer helpers did a magnificent job to get the pitch fit for today’s game against Aveley.  Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite as well for Chatham once the game started and they were beaten 5-0 by a competent but unexceptional Aveley team.

Chatham dominated completely for the first eight minutes.  During that time they won two corners and the Aveley defence looked unconvincing in dealing with them, although both corners ultimately led to shots which went wide.  Chatham’s defence looked more convincing when Aveley won two corners a little later, but even so it was Aveley who took the lead after 16 minutes.  The goal was well taken by Holland from 25 yards out, but it was still anyone’s game.

Chatham continued to win corners, and Aveley’s defence continued to struggle with them.  Jamie Taylor had an excellent chance on 38, and while he will feel that he should have scored he did at least win Chatham another corner.  Nothing came of it though, and it needed a good save from Tom Wellham to prevent Aveley from doubling their lead two minutes later.  On the stroke of half time Anthony Carlton found himself on the ball close to the penalty spot, but he chose to pass when shooting might have been a better option and the chance was lost.  Even so, Chatham were not disconsolate to find themselves 1-0 down at half time with a second half towards their preferred Maidstone Road end to come.

Four minutes into the second half,  a mishit clearance saw Aveley give the ball away in their own penalty area.  The ball fell to Kane Phillip fifteen yards out with only the goalkeeper to beat, but unfortunately his shot was well off target.

Aveley went two ahead on 52 when Baker headed in following a free kick, but Chatham came close to pulling one back within a minute.  Corey Holder played the ball to Greg Benbow who headed goalwards, but he didn’t make a clean contact and his effort was comfortably saved.  Elliott got on the end of a cross from the right to put Aveley three up on 57, and by now there could be no doubt about the result.  The fourth goal came on 69 when Elbi was hit by a Wellham clearance, and the ball rebounded off him and over the hapless keeper into the net, and Elliott’s header for the fifth on 77 was well taken to leave Chatham well beaten.

Aveley’s club statistician reports that Chatham had 18 shots to Aveley’s 11, and eight corners to Aveley’s two.  But it’s goals that win football matches, and Aveley took their chances while Chatham didn’t.
