Match Report

Referee: Mr R Hart      Attendance: 93

Chatham Town made another long away trip on Saturday, this time to the Cambridgeshire Fens to take on Soham Town Rangers. Chatham completely dominated the first half and led through Laurence Collins’ headed goal, but the home club came back to snatch a 2-1 win.

Five minutes had gone before Soham found their way into the Chatham half at all, and in that time Matt Solly had already gone just wide while goalkeeper Ordonez – one of six Spaniards in the Soham team – stood and watched.  Solly had a shot saved at the second attempt ten minutes later, and then an Ola Rabiu cross went inches over the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.

It was 24 minutes before Soham had a shot, and even that was completely mishit and went backwards.  First Laurence Collins and then Owen Kabodi had long range shots within the space of a minute, both of which forced corners, and then on 37 Chatham took the lead from another corner.  The corner was played back to Collins eight yards out, and he headed over the keeper to put Chatham in front.  Kabodi had an excellent chance to double Chatham’s lead on the stroke of half time, but even though that chance went begging Chatham were well on top.  They won seven corners in the first half to the home team’s none.

Unusually, the Chatham team spent most of the half time break practising on the pitch. They won yet another corner in the opening seconds of the second half, but then the game began to swing Soham’s way.  Soham equalised on 56 minutes, when Tom Wellham lost control of the ball after catching a free kick taken just outside the area, which allowed Sharman to score from close range.

A last ditch clearance from Collins prevented Soham from taking the lead ten minutes later, but they were denied for only four minutes.  The scorer was Sharman again, this time with a header following a corner.  There was no way back for Chatham after that, although Jamie Taylor did have a header saved by Ordonez after he received the ball from Joe Loft, who might have been better placed to shoot himself.

So another one goal defeat for Chatham Town; only one of our thirteen league defeats has been by more than one goal.  But we now have home games on three straight Saturdays, and nine points would be extremely useful.
