Match Report

Referee: Mr J Whittaker     Attendance: 121

Chatham Town made their first ever visit to Brightlingsea Regent on Saturday, and came back with three points to complete their first double of the season.  The Brightlingsea ground is an unusual one.  There is a stand on each side but they are not opposite one another, while the small group of Brightlingsea Ultras – they have a flag to identify themselves as such – position themselves behind the goal.  The pitch is laid on shingle, and as a result is always muddy.

That heavy pitch and a bitterly cold day made it difficult to play passing football and in the first half both teams opted for long ball tactics.  Brightlingsea made the early running, but before long Chatham too were getting the ball forward.  Junior Kaffo and Matt Solly both had shots well off target, and with 21 minutes played Laurence Collins set up Kaffo for a header which was saved. Chatham took the lead on the half hour, when a long ball found Kaffo on the left.  Having taken the ball almost to the goal line and found no one in position to receive a cross, he decided to aim for goal instead – and opted to go over the keeper’s head rather than around him.  The ball went into the far corner of the goal from the narrow angle, and so Chatham were ahead.

Brightlingsea missed badly five minutes before half time and again five minutes after the break, while in the first minute of the second half a good run from Joe Loft ultimately came to nothing.  Owen Kabodi’s long pass was just too strong for Kaffo on 55, and then on the hour Brightlingsea had their best chance yet to equalise.  Tom Wellham could not hold on to a hard hit shot and the ball ran to a Brightlingsea player with the goal at his mercy, but he failed to capitalise.

Brightlingsea saw another shot cleared off the line on 70, and Chatham needed another goal to be sure of the win.  That goal came on 78 minutes, when Joe Loft got on the end of a long pass.  Brightlingsea players were convinced that Loft was offside and all but stopped playing, but the flag stayed down – correctly – and Loft’s cross found Kabodi who headed home his first goal as a Chatham player.

The home club knew they were beaten by then, and spent much of the rest of the game arguing with the officials.  Whenever they did get the ball forward the Chatham defence had little difficulty in dealing with it, and after five minutes of injury time the final whistle made Chatham comfortable 2-0 winners.
