An own goal in the 67th minute was the only score as Brentwood Town won 1-0 in a game of few chances at Chatham on Saturday.

Brentwood’s Bostick issued an early warning as he took the ball from half way to the goal line in just the second minute, only to lose possession before he had chance to shoot.  Chatham might have a penalty two minutes later when Austin Gacheru went down under challenge, but the game soon settled into the pattern begun by Bostick.  Both teams passed the ball well in their own halves, but time and again they gave away possession whenever they got close to the opposing goal.  35 minutes had been played before Chatham won the game’s first two corners, and from the second of them Gacheru had a shot which was blocked.

Tom Wellham did well to catch a high cross when under challenge on 39, and Brentwood really should have scored a minute before half time.  Bostick’s shot from two feet out was off target though, and so the teams turned around goalless.

Matt Solly, who had struggled with a back injury throughout the first half, did not come out for the second half.  That forced Chatham into a slight change of formation, and it nearly paid off when an unmarked Brad Potter came within inches of Greg Benbow’s cross six minutes into the half.  Gacheru forced a save from Brentwood keeper Bowles with an hour played, but then on 67 came the only goal.  A Brentwood cross took a deflection off a Chatham player, which left Wellham scrambling for the ball.  He got a hand to it, but he could not stop it creeping into the far corner of the net and so Brentwood were ahead.

Chatham saved their best period of the game for the last ten minutes.  A Potter cross/shot went just over the bar with ten minutes to play, and then on the stroke of 90 minutes Benbow was crudely brought down a yard outside the area.  Laurence Collins took the resulting free kick and his shot was dropped by Bowles in the Brentwood goal, but Bowles was able to bat the ball away to safety before Chatham could capitalise.  Gacheru shot over the bar deep into added time, but the final whistle went to give Brentwood three slightly fortunate points.
