Match Report

Referee: Mr S Cheek     Attendance: 51

difficult evening saw Chatham Town lose 1-0 at Barkingside last Monday, in what proved to be Brad Potter’s last appearance for the club.  For one reason and another, a number of players were unable to be present and so Kevin Watson was left with little option but to play both himself and Peter Hawkins for the full 90 minutes. The bench consisted of just goalkeeper Lee Kidman and a half-fit Matt Solly, but Chatham’s performance in the second half was highly encouraging.

Barkingside’s young team clearly saw an opportunity and started the game at pace, and it needed Tom Wellham to produce two good saves in quick succession to keep them out after 7 minutes. Craig Hewitt saw one shot go wide and another just over the bar, while Liam Hickey had a shot blocked, but it was Barkingside who dominated the first half.  Three times they really should have scored, including a remarkable miss when less than a foot from goal, but Edmunds eventually did give them the lead after a confusion in the Chatham defence five minutes before half time.  Chatham had an excellent chance to equalised in first half stoppage time, but the ball didn’t bounce for Hickey and he failed to connect with the ball.

Barkingside had a shot cleared off the line eight minutes into the second half.  Then on the hour, Tom Wellham produced a magnificent save on the hour to send a fiercely hit shot away for a corner; it was so good that a Barkingside supporter has put it on YouTube.

But then a limping Greg Benbow was replaced by Matt Solly, and the game turned around completely.  Solly wasn’t able to run as much as he usually would, but he was still the best player on the pitch for that final half hour.  At one point there were three Barkingside players all unable to mark him effectively, and his long pass to Austin Edwards won Chatham a corner on 71 minutes

Four minutes from time, Chatham won a free kick thirty yards from goal.  Lawrence Collins’ hard hit shot seemed destined for the net, but the keeper got a finger to it and sent it away for a corner.  Chatham won two more corners in the next minute, and from the second of them a Lewis Knight header was saved.  The equaliser did not come though, and so Barkingside held on for a slightly fortunate 1-0 victory.
