Match Report

Referee:  Mr M Goldsmith     Attendance: 145

Chatham Town lost out by the odd goal in five at home to Wroxham on Saturday.

The game kicked off 34 minutes late.  Wroxham should perhaps have set off from Norfolk earlier than they did, and it was puzzling that the referee allowed them forty minutes to warm up even after their belated arrival.  When the game did start though, it was Chatham who made the early running with Kane Phillip causing Wroxham problems down the right wing.  After ten minutes though, Wroxham took the lead against the run of play, when White’s shot from a narrow angle on the right appeared to be deflected into the net.  Four minutes later they had the ball in the net again, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside, and they missed badly two minutes after that.

Chatham equalised on 31 minutes when Joe Loft’s cross found Austin Gacheru, whose long range header found the bottom corner of the net.  Chatham were the better side for the rest of the first half, and twice went close to taking the lead before half time.

They did take the lead within a minute of the restart.  A foul on Greg Benbow led to a yellow card – and the Wroxham player involved was a bit lucky that it was only the yellow card – and to a free kick a yard outside the penalty area.  Matt Solly’s free kick found the head of Gacheru, who scored his second goal of the game.

A Solly shot from thirty yards out went just wide on 56, but Wroxham scored twice in the next five minutes to change the course of the game.  King equalised with a header on 58, and then on 60 Finch put the Norfolk club ahead after catching Tom Wellham out of his area.

Wellham made amends with a good save on 75, and three minutes later Gacheru had a shot well saved by the Wroxham keeper.  Chatham had a good chance from a corner with a minute of normal time remaining, but no one on either side could control the ball and eventually the Wroxham keeper punched it off the line to clear the danger.  Gacheru had another shot deep into injury time, but it was well wide and was followed immediately by the final whistle.
