Match Report

Attendance: 140     Referee: S.Butler

In a close fought match of few real chances, Chatham Town fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to AFC Sudbury on Saturday.

The game could have swung Chatham’s way in the very first minute when a Sudbury player appeared to use an elbow on Lewis Knight, but the referee settled for awarding a free kick.  Chatham made the early running, and Liam Hickey headed over from a corner on 16.  Again the referee gave Sudbury the benefit of the doubt on the half hour when Austin Gacheru went down under challenge in the penalty area, but no penalty was awarded.

It was Sudbury who had more of the game for the rest of the the first half.  A long range shot from Sudbury’s Rymer on 33 hit the post, having taken everyone by surprise, but the ball spent all too long in the middle third of the pitch.  Right on half time Sudbury won a corner, but the Chatham defence dealt with it and so we were goalless at half time.

Seven minutes into the second half Sudbury began to celebrate a goal, only to see the shot which had passed Lee Kidman cleared off the line. Kidman was called on to make a good save five minutes later, but Chatham put together the game’s best passing move on the hour.  That move led to two corners and ultimately to a shot by Lee Hales, but the shot went over the bar.

Sudbury took the lead with 73 minutes played, when Sam Clarke found himself on the right hand edge of the penalty area with no one between him and the goal.  He took his chance well, but it was made too easy for him.  Kidman saved a fiercely hit shot to prevent Sudbury going two up ten minutes later, but it was Chatham who created the last two chances of the match.  A Gacheru cross on 87 found Hales, but he sliced his shot and the chance was gone.  Then in added time the Sudbury goalkeeper completely missed a punch at a cross/shot – but it went just wide.

There really isn’t much to choose between these two teams, but on the day when Rochester and Strood surprised the world by turning purple, it was the team in yellow which took the points away from Chatham.
