Match Report

Referee: Mr D Stobbart     Attendance: 73

Two goals from Austin Gacheru were enough to give Chatham Town three points away to Maldon and Tiptree on Saturday.  Kevin Watson gave a debut to Chris Webber, newly arrived from Billericay Town, and Brad Potter made his first start of the month.

Chatham took the lead after just 45 seconds.  Maldon defenders seemed not quite to have realised that the game was started, and Austin Gacheru was left unmarked when he received the ball from a Lee Hales cross.  Liam Hickey came close to doubling the lead after 11 minutes; the goalkeeper completely missed his cross/shot, but it ran just wide.

It was twenty minutes before managerless Maldon got themselves into the game, but they soon went close with a free kick.  Lewis Knight had a shot saved on the half hour, but three minutes later Chatham were two up.  The ball was played back to Austin Gacheru thirty yards from goal, and decided that a shot was his best option.  Maldon hadn’t been expecting that, and the goalkeeper saw the ball sail over his head into the goal.  It needed a good save from Lee Kidman to keep Chatham two up until half time, but Chatham were well on top and Maldon had offered little.

Right at the start of the second half, one of the travelling Chatham supporters offered the Maldon management some advice.  It may well have been good advice, but they don’t encounter many people from Northern Ireland in the Essex marshes and the helpful supporter was asked if he could please provide subtitles.

Three minutes later, a Matt Solly free kick won Chatham a corner, but for the next twenty minutes it was Maldon who had more of the ball.  Even so, they rarely looked like scoring, while a Chatham break saw Gacheru put Corey Holder through on 69.  His shot was off target though, and Maldon soon began to get on top once again.  A free kick from just outside the area was well saved by Kidman, but this led to a series of corners.  Maldon claimed to have scored from one of them, but the referee rightly decided otherwise.  Liam Hickey put a free kick over the bar on 83, while another good save from Kidman prevented Maldon pulling a goal back two minutes later, and Chatham secured a useful victory.
