Match Report

Referee: Mr O Morris-Sanders      Attendance: 56

A sparse crowd in Essex on Saturday, but a good first away win of the season for Chatham Town.

Austin Gacheru hit the side netting in the first minute, and two minutes later Chatham were denied a free kick inches outside the area when the referee apparently didn’t see a rather obvious foul.  Chatham made all the early running, but it was Burnham Ramblers who took the lead after 16 minutes.  Their first shot of the game came when they won a free kick 25 yards out, and Liam Burgess put it straight into the net.

Chatham started to get on top midway through the half, although they had a setback when striker Abraham Alalde hobbled out of the game on 41.  Akpele for Burnham Ramblers shot just wide, while in first half injury time Lee Hales mishit a shot from Gacheru’s cross.  Burnham Ramblers were perhaps a little fortunate to be ahead at half time, but it up to Chatham to turn the game around.

That is exactly what happened, as Chatham completely dominated the second half.  Tom Wellham was not called upon to make a save, and Chatham won eight corners to the home team’s none.  Just in the first ten minutes of the half, Gacheru might have had a penalty, a Hales header was well saved, and a Hales free kick was deflected for a corner.  Then with 56 minutes played Chatham were level following a Matt Solly corner.  The ball ran loose following a corner, and Corey Holder sprawled to the ground to reach it before anyone else and put it in the net.

The game went quiet for a while, but Chatham once again took complete control after Kevin Watson brought himself on as sub.  Within minutes of his introduction his cross found Holder whose header hit the post, and moments later he came within inches of getting onto the end of a Hales free kick.  With 82 minutes played he was brought down just outside the area to give Chatham a free kick.  Matt Solly’s free kick was initially cleared by Burnham, but only as far as Gacheru who shot low through the crowded penalty area to give Chatham the lead for the first time.

Burnham Ramblers finally put a few passes together in the closing minutes, but they were unable to threaten Wellham’s goal and Chatham had no difficulty in closing the game out.
