Although we dominated the first half, Chatham Town had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Ware on Tuesday night.

Ware had hardly seen the ball before Chatham took the lead after 14 minutes.  Lee Hales cross from wide on the right found Kane Phillip, and although Phillip scuffed his first attempt at a shot he was allowed a second, and this time he scored.

Unfortunately, Phillip was sent off seven minutes later following an altercation with a Ware player.  The Ware player involved was rather lucky not also to be sent off, and he was not the only Ware player who might have seen the red card during the game.

Despite being reduced to ten, Chatham doubled their lead 32 minutes into the game.  Ade Yusuff had the ball just inside the penalty area, but the Ware goalkeeper had come out to block his path. Yusuff deftly played the ball gently past the keeper, and both men were able only to stand and watch as the ball trickled into the goal.

A Ware free kick went straight into the net just before half time, but the goal was disallowed for a push on Welham.  This was a sign of what was to come, though, as Ware saw much more of the ball in the second half.

They pulled a goal back after 65 minutes, Kieran Bishop the scorer from close range.  But three minutes later Chatham had an excellent chance to restore their two goal lead.  A Lee Hales shot from distance hit the post, and the ball rebounded to Corey Holder who was unable to capitalise from close range.  Welham was forced into a good save moments later, but then with eleven minutes to play Ware were level after an unlucky Chatham player turned in a ball across the face of goal.

Chatham still went forward trying to win the game though, and had two good chances in the final ten minutes.  Matt Solly put Jamie Lawrence through for the first, but his shot was well saved.  Within minutes Yusuff put Lawrence in a good position again, but this time his shot was off target and the match ended level.

When all is said and done, you’ll take an away point when you’ve played most of the game with ten men.  Even so, Chatham will be a bit disappointed not to have won in Hertfordshire.
