Match Report

Referee: Mr T Ellams     Attendance: 54

For this season Redbridge and Barkingside play at the same ground, the Oakside Stadium in Ilford.  Chatham Town had to settle for a draw when they visited to play Barkingside on Monday evening, but when they returned five days later to play Redbridge on Saturday they came back with three points.

If we’re honest, Saturday’s was not a great game.  Both teams had played four times in a week, the pitch was rock hard and the ball was running faster than the teams expected, and both teams are in midtable with no chance of either relegation or promotion.  Even so, an away win is always a good result.

It was 13 minutes before there was a shot, and when that shot came from a Redbridge player it was well saved by Jack Bradshaw.  Chatham Town won a corner on 38 but nothing came of it, and the sparse crowd were already beginning to think that the game was destined to be a goalless draw.

In fact though, Chatham proved that wrong on the stroke of half time.  Lewis Knight headed home from a narrow angle following a corner, and Chatham were ahead.  Mind you, it was some seconds before this became clear – some thought that the linesman was trying to signal offside, while Redbridge players argued that the ball hadn’t crossed the line – but the referee correctly awarded the goal.

For the first twenty minutes of the second half Chatham were well on top, and could have added to their lead.  A passing move involving Ade Yusuff and Lee Hales ended with Austin Gacheru shooting wide, while a Yusuff thunderbolt from close to the penalty spot was well saved by Redbridge keeper Parker.  But the game finally came to life in the closing fifteen minutes, and both goalkeepers were kept busy.

Twice Yusuff shot narrowly wide, and a shot which was on target brought a good save from Parker.  It was Jack Bradshaw who had more work to do though, and he made six excellent saves in that final period.  Redbridge sent even the goalkeeper into our box when they won a corner in injury time, but Bradshaw was equal to the challenge and the three points were ours.  We’ve now lost only one of our last thirteen games, and no other club in our division can say the same.
