Match Report

Ade Yusuff’s tenth minute penalty was the only goal as Chatham Town recorded a very welcome 1-0 win at home to Waltham Abbey on Saturday.

The penalty came when Yusuff himself went down.  Waltham Abbey’s management were sure that it was more of a collision than a foul and made that opinion very plain to the referee, but that is beyond our control and we can do no more than score any penalties that are awarded to us.  Yusuff did precisely that and we were ahead.

It needed a good save from Jack Bradshaw to prevent Abbey equalising within a minute, but moments later Austin Gacheru nearly put us two up.  With the keeper out of his goal Gacheru chipped the ball over his head, but a defender was on hand to clear the ball off the line.  Chatham looked much the better side throughout the first half and created any number of chances, but all too few of them led to shots on target.  A long range shot from Yusuff was about the nearest we came to adding to our lead, but Waltham Abbey had even fewer shots and we were one up at half time.

Lee Hales could have increased our lead on the hour after the ball sat up nicely for him on the right side of the penalty area, but his shot went wide.  The same player was brought down five minutes later and it looked a more obvious penalty than the one we’d been awarded in the first half, but the referee thought not.  The second half was more even than the first though, and within seconds Abbey first wasted a good chance by shooting wide and then did have the ball in the net only to see that an offside flag had been raised.  Liam Hickey and Lewis Knight in the centre of defence ensured that Abbey had few other shooting opportunities.

One of the best pieces of play in the game came on 74 minutes.  Yusuff passed to Chatham sub Ben Chapman, who passed back to Yusuff close to the penalty spot.  Yusuff’s shot was well hit, but was equally well saved by Abbey goalkeeper Barnes in his liquorice allsort orange and black outfit.

There were few alarms in the closing period, and so Chatham secured a 1-0 win which keeps some distance between them and the relegation zone.
