Match Report

Referee: Mr L Forrester     Attendance: 192

Playing their first league game for a month, and playing a competitive match on an artificial surface for the first time ever, Chatham Town were the better team for most of the game but still went down to a 2-0 defeat.

Chatham had all of the early possession, and Ade Yusuff hit the bar with only five minutes played.  Alfie May’s shot after 18 was well wide, but three minutes later Harlow goalkeeper Knowles could only parry his fiercely hit shot from the right.  The ball fell to Yusuff, but he too was denied by the keeper.  Yusuff hit a shot into the side netting on 32, but three minutes later Harlow Town took the lead completely against the run of play.

A long Harlow ball down the left wing seemed innocuous – no Harlow player looked like reaching it, and Jack Bradshaw came out of the area to collect the ball.  Unfortunately, his clearance kick was mishit into the path of Harlow’s Dadson, who saw the unattended goal and shot from 30 yards out.  His shot was on target, and so Harlow had the lead. Right at the end of the first half, Lee Hales’s corner was headed goalwards by Brad Potter – but with Knowles beaten, the ball was cleared off the line to keep Harlow ahead.

Potter’s head was in the action again seven minutes into the second half when it got onto the end of Kieran McCann’s cross, but this time it hit the post.  Potter launched a speculative shot from the halfway line a minute later, and it went just wide.  Knowles just beat May to a long ball forward on the hour, while the goalkeeper saved well from a Hales free kick just outside the area ten minutes later.

Harlow had had only one genuine shot in half an hour, but that was to change in the final 15 minutes of the game.  Twice their leading scorer Read shot wide, and there was a good save from Bradshaw, but five minutes before time Harlow did extend their lead.  The goal was well taken by Read, but perhaps mainly down to Chatham pushing players forward in search of an equaliser.  Austin Gacheru shot over the bar in injury time, but by then the result was clear and it was Harlow who ended 2-0 winners.
