Chatham Town will be the happier of the two clubs after a 0-0 draw at home to Needham Market today.  The visitors from Suffolk are targeting a place in the play offs, but a solid performance from the Chatham defence – especially Liam Hickey and Corey Holder, who both had excellent games – meant that they had few clear chances.

On a heavy pitch and with neither team having had much football recently, both sides looked rusty in the opening part of the game.  Jack Bradshaw saved from Needham’s Melaugh after 8 minutes, while a Lee Hales effort was comfortably saved on 14.  Chatham then had two appeals for penalties turned down, the first for apparently holding a player back and the second for apparent handball.

Later in the half, the tackling became rather robust.  Players on both sides were booked, including veteran Kemal Izzet who is playing out his career with Needham Market after twelve years and 422 games at Colchester United.  Tempers became a little frayed for a while, and it did look as if the game might turn ugly – although both teams calmed down midway through the second half and no red cards were seen.

An Ade Yusuff shot from distance ten minutes into the second half went wide, and twenty minutes later the same player went close after a long ball forward broke to him.  Needham Market too created openings, but few of them led to serious attempts on goal.  They did have a period of pressure in the Chatham box on 81, but after three separate shooting attempts were blocked the Chatham defence cleared the ball.

The two best chances of the game came right at the end.  With two minutes remaining, Needham substutite Logan found himself in an excellent position but headed well over the bar.  Then on the stroke of time, the ball again broke to Yusuff whose shot was on target but was well cleared for a corner by goalkeeper Plummer, formerly of Glenavon. The final whistle followed with seconds, leaving Chatham Town with a home point that they’d have settled for at the start of the game.
