A late Aveley goal condemned Chatham Town to another rather frustrating home defeat on Saturday.

Chatham were without Alfie May and Austin Gacheru who were both suspended, and Jack Bradshaw who was watching cricket in Australia.  It is reported that he may join the England team for the fifth test, although the management are denying rumours that we have in return signed Monty Panesar.

Aveley were the better side for most of the first half.  They took the lead after ten minutes when Lee Kidman could only parry a shot into the path of Kyle Asante, who scored from close range. For Chatham, Luke May did well to take the ball into the Aveley area on 19 but ran out of room.  Ten minutes before the interval, Chatham won two corners in quick succession and from the second these, a Kieran McCann shot from the edge of the area missed the top corner of the net by inches.

Kidman had saved well from a free kick midway through the half, but his finest moment came when Aveley were awarded a penalty five minutes before half time.  Not only did he save the penalty, but he saved again when the penalty taker followed up his spot kick with a second shot seconds later.

Another good save from Kidman prevented Aveley from adding to their lead three minutes into the second half, and from then on Chatham began to dominate.  An excellent long pass from Corey Holder led to a corner, and a minute later Ade Yusuff went close after a pass from Lee Hales.  A Chatham goal began to look inevitable, and it came after 54 minutes.

A through ball found Yusuff with only the goalkeeeper to beat thirty yards out.  Aveley appeared to think that he was offside and practically stopped, but the flag stayed down.  Yusuff easily rounded the keeper – who shaped to rugby tackle him but thought better of an act that would surely have brought him a red card – and then put the ball into the empty net to level the scores.

Minutes later, a Luke May effort was only just cleared for a corner, while at the other end an Aveley shot beat the keeper but was cleared via the post.  Yusuff beat two inside the area to create a good chance but then shot wide, while a Greg Benbow was deflected straight into the hands of the keeper.  But with 84 minutes on the clock Aveley took back the lead – Asante again the scorer from close range.

Kalvin Morath-Gibbs hit the bar in injury time, but it was Aveley who took the three points as Chatham conceded in the last ten minutes for the third game in a row.
