Match Report

Referee: Mr P Yates    Attendance: 98

Chatham Town matched second placed Thurrock for 90 minutes on Saturday, but then fell to a very late only goal of the game.

Thurrock made the early running, and it needed a good save from fit again Jack Bradshaw to keep the teams level after just four minutes.  Chatham won two corners in quick succession three minutes later, but Alfie May’s shot from the second of them went over the bar.

Thereafter, shots on goal were few; quite simply, both defences did their jobs properly.  Kieran McCann had an effort easily saved, while Ade Yusuff appealed half-heartedly for a free kick in a dangerous position after he collided with the Thurrock goalkeeeper just outside the area and went to ground.  Otherwise, for the rest of the first half the defences cancelled each other out.

If Chatham had ever so slightly shaded the first half, Thurrock shaded the second half.  A shot from distance on 53 was just wide, while Bradshaw did well to block another while out of position.  At the other end, an Alfie May free kick forced the goalkeeper to punch clear, and the same player went down inside the area on 87 but didn’t protest when no penalty was awarded.  Thurrock had an excellent chance on 81, but with only the goalkeeper to beat the shot was sliced horribly.

So to injury time.  Thurrock – managed by Mark Stimson, once of Gillingham – won a corner, and after several touches in the goal area the ball was turned into the net by Simon King, once of Gillingham.  Alfie May was sent off seconds later, apparently for words to a linesman, and the final whistle soon followed.

To say that the result was frustrating for the travelling Chatham Town supporters would be an understatement, and it will have been even more frustrating for the players and the management.  Even so, there were plenty of positives to be taken from the performance.  It was good to see Jack Bradshaw back in action after injury, and even better to see Corey Holder starting a game on the ground where we feared that his season had ended just two months ago.
