Match Report

Referee: Mr R Hart     Attendance: 113

A disappointing performance by Chatham Town saw them crash to a 5-1 defeat at Soham.  With Alfie May serving a one-game suspension, Kevin Watson gave a debut to new signing Ade Yussuf who has joined from Hornchurch.  His debut goal was one of the few things for the Chatham supporters to cheer about.

Soham took the lead after just five minutes.  There seemed no obvious danger when Stanley lined up a shot from the left hand edge of the penalty area, but he saw a spot in the far corner and found it.  It was 2-0 six minutes later when Chatham lost possession inside the area, which allowed McCabe to score a simple goal.  Soham thought they had a third on 19, but the referee ruled that the whole of the ball had not crossed the goal line.

Kieran McCann went close on the half hour, but Soham increased their lead on 35 when Darling’s shot from outside the area somehow passed Lee Kidman.  Chatham pulled one back two minutes later though when Ade Yussuf scored from close range assisted by an error from Soham’s Spanish goalkeeeper, and they went on to dominate the closing minutes of the first half.  Luke May found himself in an excellent position but got his foot stuck and couldn’t get an effective shot away.  Chatham would have been a bit fortunate to have turned round trailing just 3-2, but it would have set up an interesting second half.

As it was, for the first 20 minutes of the second half it was Soham who looked like a team 3-1 down.  The goalkeeper produced two good saves to deny Kieran McCann on 61 but otherwise looked unsure of himself, and Chatham failed to capitalise on a couple of chances which could have seen them level.  Unfortunately though, Chatham’s fate was sealed on 65 when a free kick just outside the area was cleared by Soham, and the player who cleared the ball broke at speed down field.  He was brought down by Liam Hickey thirty yards from goal, and the referee felt that he had no option but to produce the red card.

Stanley put Soham 4-1 ahead with ten minutes to play, a simple goal following a defensive mix up, and completed his hat trick in the closing minutes
